Recap – The Essence Music Festival

By: Portia aka Intern Tia Tia

Beyonce' at Essence Festival

One word. Phenomenal!  That’s all I have to say about the production of this year’s Essence Music Festival, held in the musical and cultural city of New Orleans, as it’s held every year – did not disappoint.  TWS Media sleuths was on the pulse at the “One Night Only” event hosted by actress, Cynthia Garrett, ready to give a great recap of the happenings, partyin’, dancin’, jazzin’ and celebratin’ promised to take over the city.  Katrina’s imprint is still felt as evidenced by many of the physical areas around this city, but could not damage the spirits that sang and danced throughout it.

Beyonce’ Knowles, headlined the concert shouting, “Put your hands up!!”, and that was all she wrote!  Beyonce’ danced back and forth in her 4 inch heels, singing “Put a Ring on it.”  As the camera turned to the crowd you could see women putting their hands in guys face twisting it back and forth as Beyonce’ instructed them too. Too funny!  My only question is what kind of hair extensions does she have because it was just flowing and I didn’t see any braids for a sew in? Nice job Bey’s stylist!

It was so much talent and star power from old school to new school, a music lovers dream! EnVogue, Ne-Yo, Jazmine Sullivan, Salt-N-Pepa, John Legend, Charlie Wilson, Al Green, Teena Marie and Robin Thicke all blessed the stage on this musical evening.  And speaking of EnVogue, the ladies came out in all black swaying back and forth while singing, one of their number one hits, “My Lovin” (You’re Never Gonna Get It).   Next they sang “Free your mind.”  This ensemble really took me back!

In other news, Alicia Keys was said to take a plunge…makes me recall that song she sings, “I Keep on Fallin’”….Okay, seriously, she took a fall, but apparently was so smooth with it that it looked as if it was all part of the performance.  And her reps say that her and baby are doing fine.

Trey Songz & T.I. shut down Carol’s Daughter’s “Toast to Women” event which brought out

Trey Songz & T.I. @ 2010 Essence Music Festival - Necole Bitchie

the likes of Tameka Raymond, Jada Pinkett-Smith and of course, the fabulous Mary J. Blige who debut her latest fragrance, “My Life”, which is a Carol’s Daughter collaboration. Go Mary!

Then came one of my favorites, John Legend, hello! “Let’s get lifted,” I wonder if he sang that for me? Now was he fly or what; we even share something in common, DIMPLES!!!!  When he sang, “Green Light,” a song that shares a special place in the heart of TWS Marketing Communications UnAgency!  Catch us live every Friday at 11 am EST to The Greenlight Project on Blog talk radio.

Overall this Annual, “One Night Only”, Essence Musical Festival was off the charts!  Hip Hop, R&B, Oldies, Old School and New School were in the building! Each and every artist truly did a great job!!! After watching a show like this it shows you that Hip Hop isn’t dead! All these genres of music are all similar in a certain extent so let’s keep jammin!  I cannot wait until the Annual Essence Musical Festival!  Great job Essence!!!

Funny Man Owen Smith on The Greenlight Project

By: K. Denise Richardson

The Greenlight Project is so excited to have funny man and comedian Owen Smith on the show tomorrow June 11th at 11am EST.

If you watch television, odds are you’ve seen this face.  Maybe from his numerous appearances on the Chris Rock hit, “Everybody Hates Chris”; or from his hilarious stint in the Ice Cube sitcom, “Are We There Yet?” on TBS. Or maybe you’ve seen one of his many commercials, from Fiber One, to McDonalds, to his HILARIOUS Nicorette ad where he goes toe to toe with a SHARK!

His name is OWEN SMITH, and all he wants to do is make you laugh. Watching Owen on stage is like watching a conductor command an orchestra.  His compelling 6’5” frame combined with his truthful, primal and unapologetic approach to his craft gives him license to lead his audiences on journeys they may not normally take with other comedians.  His fresh takes on race, politics, relationships, and society have critics using adjectives like: “witty”, “clever”, “brilliant”, and even “genius” to describe his performances.  Television and film star, Terry Crews (White Chicks, Everybody Hates Chris) says, “The future of comedy is here, and that future is Owen Smith!” And sitcom legend, Ernest Thomas (What’s Happening, Everybody Hates Chris) says, “I was there when Sam Kinison, Eddie Murphy, and Jim Carey all became superstars, and Owen Smith is in that league!”

So get somebody to watch your kids now, so you and that special someone can come out and laugh your you know what’s off at the hilariously funny OWEN SMITH!

The Soundtracks of My Life

By Tamika L. Morrison

Do you ever think of starring in your own video or creating a soundtrack to your life?  Call me vain, imaginative or bizarre, but I’ve always imagined having my own video to certain songs even before reality TV was born!  As we come off the celebration of Memorial Day Weekend to honor our nation’s soldiers for the supreme sacrifice they offer us – I encourage you to use the spirit of liberty and put on the soundtrack to your life and dance like nobody’s watchin’!

If I had one song to choose as my life’s soundtrack , it would be Goapele’sCloser to my Dreams’.  I remember when I first heard that song; it was love at first note!  She literally took me ‘higher and higher beyond what I could see’ into my greatest desires so I could begin to visualize what life might have in store for me.  It was amazing to embrace and believe these things were possible for me.

I was living in my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina at the time and was really starting to taste the juicy fruits of my hard-earned labor.  I’d just moved into my townhouse I built from the ground up, was excelling at work and trying out my new-found creative freedom as a published writer but I often wondered was there more?  The lyrics that spoke to me says:

Some times it feels like I’ll never go pass here
Some times it feels like I’m stuck forever and ever

But, I’m going higher
Closer to my dreams
I’m goin’ higher and higher
I can almost reach

Every time I needed a reminder of how far I could truly reach – no matter the obstacles or challenges I faced, I’d play this song.  It wasn’t long before I literally threw caution to the wind and found myself packing up leaving the townhouse I was so proud to live in for three years and the career that seemed to be moving smoothly along and heading to the big city of Atlanta into a one-bedroom apartment in Buckhead boldly to explore what else this life might have to offer me.  It was scary and exciting all at the same time!

Atlanta truly beheld many great treasures for me (good and bad) and I am glad Goapele’s song found its way into my life – little did she know the impact it would have on me.  Speaking of impact, you never know whose life you are touching, so be conscious as you make the soundtrack of your life.  Know that somewhere, someone else is listening, watching and will be inspired – good or bad – by the soundtracks of your life.

So as I jam to my favorite sounds adding upon my own life’s soundtrack, I’ll give you some other songs to discover – and if they ‘move’ you in some way, feel free to share!  I’m anxious to know.

1)      Alicia Keys “Unthinkable” – motivates me to dare to dream the unthinkable in my life and soar!

2)      T.I.’s “I’m back”, when I’m feeling like I need a little ‘pick-me-up’;

3)      Mary Mary’s “Ordinary People”, when I feel a little doubtful and

4)      Ken Ford’sMoments in Love when I think of all the beauty surrounding me in love, life, family and fun times.

Until next time,

au revoir!
